The challenge

We live in an era of unprecedented achievements - and of growing challenges. They bear the names "endangered peace and liberty", "climate and environmental destruction", "uncontrolled and forced migration", "widespread injustice and inequality" and "indebtedness". Isn't it about time we made some appropriate structures? We are living in the year 2019 and as the people we still haven't organised ourselves on a global scale. Would you like to work together with other people towards global solutions, free from any domination?

The common goals

The world has an agenda. It is comprised of the UN's 17 Global Goals. They constitute the blueprint for the imparting to the globe of peace, rule of law, solidarity, education, sustainable prosperity, environmental health, climate protection and orderly migration. In response to efforts undertaken by the UN's Secretariat, the Global Goals were endorsed by countries world-wide. But as far as concrete global actions by the governments are concerned, there's no debate on whether the glass is half full or half empty: it is dry.

It will require some $300 billion a year to coordinate and cofinance the implementation of the Global Goals. That figure is equivalent to one thousandth of the world's private wealth. Surveys conducted in a variety of countries have shown that there is a large number of persons in each of them who are prepared to pay this one thousandth of their private wealth into a UN Planetary Bank Account. 70 millions Americans, for instance, are willing to get involved. Another wish and concern of these donors: to determine for themselves which Global Goals they support. 

Someone who owns 1.000 dollars, for instance, would voluntarily deposit 1 dollar. To illustrate this concept, you can see 1.000 coins next to 999. We probably don't even notice the difference. And yet, this one thousandth of our wealth can softly change the world.

Planet Earth finally got what it's always needed. A bank account of its own.

By viewing politicians as saviors, we ask to little of ourselves - and too much of them. In actual fact, the givens of their positions virtually completely exclude their being able to handle global-scale responsibilities. The politicians work after all for national governments - and these are controlled by and strive to achieve national interests.

The job of providing the globe with good governance has devolved to us, the world's citizens. Our ability to accept and master this challenge will stem from our ceasing to operate on individual and separate bases. This will be brought about by our setting up a bank account for the world - one supported by and working for each and every resident of this planet.

 The UN

A society encompassing the entire planet requires a management capable of running it. In recognition of such, the world created the United Nations (UN) - and gave it two orientations. One is national. It is due to its member nations being in the General Assembly. A number of these countries are also members of the UN's Security and Economic and Social Councils. The nations establish these institutions' objectives and distribute its resources - and general follow short-term and national interests when doing such.

The UN's other pillar is global in orientation. This is manifested itself in its international services, which enable the UN - via its Secretariat, which is headed by the Secretary-General - to discharge its world-spanning responsibilities. The Secretariat has committed itself to operating independently and on behalf of the world's society. This requires the Secretariat's having achieved a requisite level of autonomy from national interests, and a necessary quantity ot resources. There are many cases in which the Secretariat has received such. Such independence of operation has led - to provide examples - to the fostering of international aviation and mail.

There are also many cases in which the UN's member states hinder the work of the organization's global operations. These hindrances cause the UN to often malfunction, to be bureaucratic and halting. The UN often seems to be the Sleeping Beauty of international organizations. There is, however, a way to kiss the UN back to life and into action: by creating a bank account from and for all of humanity. Doing such will cause the UN to live up to its original mandate and to activate its legitimacy and global management.

An effective global governance structure could follow this draft of a UN World Account. It is based on surveys and UN experience. The system for the management of the UN Planetary Bank Account will be headed by a steering commitee. The request to act as the steering commitee is addressed to active and former UN Secretaries-General.

Participation

Our survey shows that a majority favours the following participation model: the UN should create a sub-account for each of the 17 Goals. This allows each contributor to decide for themselves which goal to support. All they need to do is mention the goals’ numbers in their payment reference. For example: 1, 4, 15, 16 (1=no poverty, 4=quality education, 15=life on land, 16=peace, justice and strong institutions). Apart from financing the World Account, the sub-account deposits allow for conclusions about the will of the participating population. 

How can you participate?

If you want to get personally involved, we like to suggest the following two acitivities:

Talk to other people about the Global Goals and the benefit of a UN World Account. You can also refer to this website.

Donate a thousandth of your wealth to the Goals that matter most to you. The funds raised in this Pilot World Account will be offered to the UN Secretariat with the request to examine the actual creation of a UN World Account. This means that with your contribution, you decide on the chances of a global community fund of our civil society. If the plan of a promising UN World Account of our Civil Society fails, the assets of the pilot will be handed over to the Welthungerhilfe.

Pilot-Weltkonto e.V. (World Account Pilot, registered voluntary association) is an independent and politically neutral initiative for the establishment of a UN World Account of the people. Purpose: to finance and realise the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The initiative was startet by German financial planner Joachim° Ackva and Dutch artist Daniela° Tiben. Some supporters put a discreet circular symbol ° (the degree sign on your keyboard) behind their first name. It symbolises their support for a UN World Account and the Global Goals.
